Brew Like a Barista: The Foolproof Guide to Picking the Perfect Coffee Grind

Brew Like a Barista: The Foolproof Guide to Picking the Perfect Coffee Grind

Fresh beans are critical - But what coffee grind should you choose?

The grind is where good coffee becomes great. At The Coffee Fool, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all. That’s why we offer more grind options than your average roaster even lists.

Whether you're a drip machine loyalist, French Press fanatic, or cold brew devotee, your grind matters. Here's our foolproof breakdown:

Whole Bean

For: Coffee control freaks who grind fresh

If you’ve got a burr grinder at home, whole bean is the way to go. You'll lock in maximum freshness and fine-tune the grind for whatever method you're using — from pour-over to French Press to espresso.

Pro tip: Flavor fades fast once coffee is ground. For the freshest, fullest cup, grind whole beans right before brewing.

Drip Grind

For: Standard home coffee makers

This is your go-to if you're using a basic countertop drip machine with a flat-bottom filter. It’s balanced, clean, and made for a steady morning routine.

Don’t overthink it — just brew and go.

Strong Drip Grind

For: Drip drinkers who like their coffee bold

Same drip coffee machine, stronger results. A slightly finer grind extracts more richness and body without veering into bitter territory. Think deeper flavor, same easy process.

For those mornings when you need an extra jolt.

Espresso Grind

For: Espresso machines and moka pots

Fine, powdery, and designed for high-pressure extraction. Whether you're running a countertop machine or a stovetop moka, this grind gives you that signature crema and bold kick.

Not recommended for drip — it’ll clog your filter and your mood.

Coarse Grind

For: Cold brew and cowboy-style coffee

Thick and chunky, this grind is made to steep slow and long. Ideal for 12- to 24-hour cold brew batches or wild west brewing where filters are optional.

Patience pays off here.

Perk Grind

For: Classic percolators

Specifically ground for the vintage (and still beloved) stovetop or electric percolator. It falls between drip and French Press grinds for a strong, clean cup with that nostalgic kick.

If your percolator’s still ticking, this is your grind.

French Press Grind

For: Mesh filter lovers

This coarse grind won’t slip through the filter but still gives you a full-bodied, robust brew. Designed for long steeps and bold flavor — without the grit.

Perfect your plunge.

Very Fine Grind

For: AeroPress addicts and moka pot masters

Somewhere between espresso and Turkish. Ideal for short extraction methods like AeroPress (especially with paper filters). Delivers intensity in a compact format.

Warning: Don’t run this through a drip machine unless you enjoy disaster.

Turkish (Powder) Grind

For: Traditional Turkish brewing

This is as fine as it gets — the consistency of flour. Perfect for brewing in a cezve (Turkish coffee pot), this grind makes for rich, unfiltered cups loaded with aroma and character.

This one’s for the purists. Don’t improvise.

We Grind Fresh, You Brew Right

Whether you're a pour-over purist or a cold brew connoisseur, we've got the right grind for your gear. All our coffees are ground fresh to order — because stale coffee is for amateurs.

Still unsure? Start with our Drip Grind for everyday ease or Whole Bean for full control. Your machine will thank you.
